What is Dash for Down Syndrome

Dash for Down Syndrome was established to celebrate Down syndrome awareness and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome in the community. People around the world are walking to show their support for more than 400,000 individuals with Down syndrome in the U.S. Every dollar raised brings us one step closer to ensuring that every individual will have the opportunity to reach his or her potential.

Down Syndrome Association of Brazos Valley held our first Awareness Walk in 2004. Up until today, it has become our largest fundraising event, allowing us to support local programs and services that benefit all the individuals with Down syndrome in our community.

What is Down syndrome?

Down syndrome is a genetic condition which is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition. It occurs in 1 out of every 691 births and affects people of all races and economic levels. Typically, babies receive 23 chromosomes from their mother and 23 from their father. A baby with Down syndrome, for unknown reasons, will have three copies of the 21st chromosome instead of two. That is why Down syndrome is also called Trisomy 21. Every cell will contain 47 instead of the typical 46 chromosomes.

There are also two other forms of Down syndrome, which are quite rare – mosaic and translocation. This extra genetic material will affect a baby’s development, however, the baby has also inherited many physical and personality characteristics from his/her parents as well. In the United States there are approximately 350,000 individuals living with Down syndrome. These individuals are active, vital members of their families and communities. A life with Down syndrome is a life well worth living.

Join the Down Syndrome Association of Brazos Valley as we unite for a common cause and raise funds and awareness. Whether you have Down syndrome, know someone who does, or just want to show your support, take the first step and donate or register today! Help us spread the word; all are welcome to participate in our celebration!

The health, safety and well-being of everyone participating in this event is a priority at all times. Please know that we are carefully following CDC and Department of Health Guidelines as it relates to COVID-19 and we will keep everyone informed should we need to make any changes to the event.

Your support of this event enables a variety of educational and social programs throughout the year to benefit people with Down syndrome, from birth through adulthood. This year, our funds will go to support our education and outreach programs.

We can’t do what we do without all of you who participate, our volunteers, and our sponsors. You are making a difference to people in all of Brazos Valley!
