Down Syndrome Association of Brazos Valley
The Buddy Walk® was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome in the community. People around the world are walking to show their support for more than 400,000 individuals with Down syndrome in the U.S. Every dollar raised brings us one step closer to ensuring that every individual will have the opportunity to reach his or her potential.
Down Syndrome Association of Brazos Valley held our first Buddy Walk in 2004. Up until today, Buddy Walk has become our largest fundraising event, allowing us to support local programs and services that benefit all the individuals with Down Syndrome in our community.
All people with Down syndrome have an extra, critical portion of chromosome 21 present in all or some of their cells. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome. Although 5K’s are usually 3.1 miles, our 5K run will have an extra .11 miles, making our 5K a 3.21 mile run- to celebrate the extra chromosome, hence “5K with a little extra”.
Each year, DSABV will donate a portion of our proceeds from our 5K “With a Little Extra” to another not-for-profit agency in the Brazos Valley that does valuable work supporting our community. In 2019, we’ve chosen to support educators. Donated money will go to education foundations within the counties in which funds are raised.
Join the Down Syndrome Association of Brazos Valley as we unite for a common cause and raise funds for the 17th Annual DSABV Buddy Walk® Walk Your Way Weekend. Whether you have Down syndrome, know someone who does, or just want to show your support, take the first step and donate or register today! Help us spread the word; all are welcome to participate in our celebration!
The health, safety and well-being of everyone participating in this event is a priority at all times. Please know that we are carefully following CDC and Department of Health Guidelines as it relates to COVID-19 and we will keep everyone informed should we need to make any changes to the event.
Your support of Buddy Walk enables a variety of educational and social programs throughout the year to benefit people with Down syndrome, from birth through adulthood. This year, our funds will go to support our education and outreach programs.
We can’t do what we do without all of you who participate, our volunteers, and our sponsors. You are making a difference to people in all of Brazos Valley!
