Handwriting Without Tears

WHEN: Monday nights for 6 weeks each semester

WHERE: Sul Ross Elementary

WHY: To make legible and fluent handwriting an easy and automatic skill for children with special needs. Unique and compelling curriculum design and teaching strategies facilitate this goal. We use multi-sensory techniques and consistent habits for letter formation to teach handwriting to kids pre-K through cursive. It also helps improve a child's self-confidence, pencil grip, body awareness and posture.

WHO: Brought to you by the Down Syndrome Association of Brazos Valley

The class is designed for children with special needs, ages 3 and up, who have difficulty with fine motor skills. Your child will learn at his or her own pace according to his or her own skill set.

Taught by Phyllis Hodges, a local teacher certified in the Handwriting Without Tears method, with one-one-one Aggie volunteers .

Math Program
When: Tuesday evenings 6 weeks each semester
Where: Sul Ross Elementary

Time: 5:30 - 6:30pm
The class is designed for children with special needs, ages 5 and up, who have difficulty withmath skills. Your child will learn at his or her own pace according to his or her own skill set.
Cost: $20 members $30 non-members
Application due 4 weeks prior to beginning of class check calendar for class dates

Cooking Class

What: a cooking class for teens with Down syndrome ages (11-21)

Where: Trinity Baptist Church, Bryan
 
When: 2nd Saturday of each month February through November
 
Time: 9 – 11am
 
Purpose: not only to teach teens how to cook but to incorporate math and reading. The teen with help from volunteers will make a dish each month. They will read and follow the recipe card and make their dish. They will learn measurements, following directions, self-confidence and cooperation.

Summer Reading/Math Program

The DSABV will be holding a summer reading and Math Program for students with Down syndrome. The student/teacher ratio will be a maximum of 4/1.  Register Early class limit is 16 students. Deadline for registration will be May 27, 2011.  Cost of the class is $125 for members and $175 for non-members. If you need assistance with payment please contact Christy Knight at 979-778-7010.  Eligibility requirements: Student has Down syndrome/intellectual disability, Kindergarten through 3rd grade functioning level in math and/or reading.


Dates of Class:

20 hours during summer

Class will be from 3:00 – 5pm. You will be able to drop off your child at 2:45 pm. The classes will be held at Central Baptist Church at 1991 FM 158 Bryan.

Deadline for registration will be May 10, 2012.
